US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.
“Producers said ‘It’s a nice project, a great project… where are the white heroes?’” he told the press during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.
“I couldn’t get the money here, I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn’t believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to,” he said.
D”The first question you get, is ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, it’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.
“Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!”, he said. “Maybe I’ll have the chance to prove it.”
“Toussaint,” Glover’s first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti’s independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.
The uprising he led was bloodily put down in 1802 by 20,000 soldiers dispatched to the Caribbean by Napoleon Bonaparte, who then re-established slavery after its ban by the leaders of the French Revolution.
Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, the film will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.
How the fuck can a film about the Haitian Revolution/Fight for Independence/Black Slave Revolt have “white heroes”??

I’m going to see it 5 times. There has to be a place where we can donate money to the production of this movie. People need to put the word out. THATS WAY TOO MUCH TALENT IN ONE FILM TO PASS UP. Fuck Hollywood, and Fuck white heroes. This is a REAL BLACK FILM.

WTF?!
They are always looking for white saviors – especially in stories that concern POC. It’s never really about us and as he said, if there aren’t any good white people in it, white people won’t go out to see it cause they’ll assume that it’s a ‘black movie’ made solely for black people. That and the fact that they don’t want to be filled with white guilt.

Hate Crimes Against Latinos Increase by Almost 47% in California
Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today announced that the number of reported hate crimes in California held steady in 2010. In 2010, there were 1,107 hate crime events reported statewide, and in 2009 the number of hate crimes reported statewide was 1,100.
“A crime that is motivated by hate is a crime against all people,” Attorney General Harris said. “We will monitor and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.”

Reporter: If i can just stop you for a moment—you say that you’re not shocked—does this mean that you condone what happened in your community, last night?
Howe: Of course not! What would I condone it for? What I’m concerned about more than anything else, there’s a young man called Mark Duggan. He has parents, he has brothers, he has sisters, and two yards away from where he lives, a police officer blew his head off. Let me finish—[inaudible due to reporter interrupting]
Reporter: Well Mr Howe, we have to wait for the official (???) before we can say things like that. We don’t know what’s happened to Mr Duggan. We have to wait for the police report on it. If I can take you on a little bit, you’re talking about young people, your grandson
Howe: [keeps trying to speak and gets interrupted] They have been stopping and searching young Blacks for no reason at all. I have a grandson, he’s an angel, and he began to [???] when the police slapped him up against the wall, and searched him. I asked him the other day, if he had the sense that something was going seriously wrong in this country. I asked him how many times have the police searched you. He said papa, I can’t count there’s so many times.
Reporter: Mr Howe, that may well have happened and if you say it did I’m not going to gainsay you. But that is not an excuse to go out rioting and cause the sort of damage that we’ve been seeing over the past few days.
Howe: Where were you in 1991 in Brixton? I don’t call it rioting, I call it an insurrection of the masses of the people. It is happening in Syria, it is happening in Clapham, it’s happening in Liverpool. It’s happening in Port of Spain, Trinidad. And that is the nature of the hysterical moment. There is, it takes—
Reporter: [interrupting] Mr. Howe, if I can just ask you, you are not a stranger to riots yourself, I understand, are you? You have taken part in them yourself?
Howe: I have never taken part in a single riot. I have been on demonstrations and ended up in a conflict. And have some respect for an old West Indian negro, instead of accusing me of being a rioter. (???) Have
some respect!
And at the end, is that the reporter saying that he sounds like an idiot? Total lack of respect for his point of view. He can’t say that Mark Duggan was shot by police without an official inquiry, but she won’t take his word for it that his son and grandson are regularly roughed up by the police either. Why did she interview him if she didn’t want to hear what he had to say?
