this photograph will always be a reference point to me, when people bring up how the marbles were transferred “through consent by the government ”at the time””“” as if the Ottomans had any right to sell Greek people’s history to Britain while Britain used their bodies to dig up their own past and steal it from them as recently as the late 19th century. so no, the common “Greeks had no idea about antiquity” narrative isn’t going to fly; they had no access because they were living under an imperial occupation.
